As you say, even on XP there are compatibility issues with games, for which plenty of people have no use (and I didn't even mention Vista, with a whole brave knew bag of fleas). So people buy a Linux box, where everything just works, like a Play Station 3 (it runs on Linux). Sympathetic as I am to Linux advocacy,

Other than YA entertainment game, that is. For more HD, would not a NAS running on Gigabit Ethernet actually have better I/O than the laptop-class drive within a Mini? 1000Gb Ethernet can run smaller applications but using a drive for video editing, 3D rendering or gaming is no dice. Try it.

Windows Vista is a definite improvement over XP and since console games have never had any interest for me any game that is Vista compatible will be fine. In my opinion once you have met all a games hardware requirements increasing hardware requirements does not add much to a game performance.

Vista vs XP gaming performance
Either one, Vista or XP would work well. It has been reported that some games may not be supported by Vista, yet. Vista may run slower than XP, too. Because Vista is new there will be continued improvements on the OS, so speed and compatibility issues will be ironed out. I recommend Vista, if you are thinking of

choppy sound / slow 3d gaming in Vista 64 vs XP sp2?
Some games will run faster in XP still until the game is updated. For example, my favorite game right now is eve-online. It runs *very* well on XP, never crashes, gets high frame rates, etc. Under Vista, it's also rock solid, *but* it runs about 5% slower than under XP. So I am getting a very slight performance hit
